Acupuncture is an element of traditional Chinese medicine that has been in use for over 5,000 years. The basis of Acupuncture lies in the belief that a person's body contains a vital energy, called Qi (pronounced "chee"), that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines called meridians. Each meridian matches up with an organ system of the body. Disease or discomfort appears when there is an imbalance in the flow of Qi throughout these meridians. An Acupuncturist inserts needles into specific points along these meridian lines to restore balance to the flow of Qi.
Om Chakra Wellness Center is pleased to have our very own acupuncturist on staff. Caitlin is a State Board Licensed Acupuncturist and has a passion for Acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
During an Acupuncture treatment, fine needles are inserted into the body at specific points to address specific health problems. There are more than 1,000 known acupoints, which have been mapped by the Chinese over a period of 2,000 years.
In the past three decades, electromagnetic research has confirmed the existence and location of these points.
The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for over 40 common disorders such as:
- Ear, Nose and Throat disorders such as Earache, Sinusitis and Laryngitis.
- Respiratory Disorders including Cold and Flu, Bronchitis, Asthma, Allergies and Emphysema.
- Gastrointestinal disorders including Nausea, Indigestion, Diarrhea, Constipation and Ulcers.
- Circulatory Disorders including Hypertension, High Cholesterol and Angina.
- Urogenital Disorders including Incontinence and Cystitis.
- Gynecological Disorders including Menopause, Post Menopausal Syndrome and Hot Flashes, Infertility and Endometriosis.
- Musculosketal Disorders including muscle pain, TMJ, Sciatica, Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel and Fibromyalgia.
- Emotional and Neurological Disorders including Anxiety, Depression and Addiction.
First time Acupuncture clients, please allow one and a half hours for your first session. It will include an initial consultation with the acupuncture treatment. The acupuncturist will gather information about your past and present health conditions and life circumstances. Each treatment is then designed uniquely to address imbalances as they are specifically experienced by each individual.
Subsequent visits will last about an hour. The number of treatments required varies according to the client's individual needs.

ABCs of Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 5,000 years, and is still practiced today in hospitals and clinics all over the country. It is arguably the oldest, most commonly practiced medical procedure in the world and is used by one-third of the world as a primary health care system. In the U.S., acupuncture is practiced by licensed acupuncturists that have completed national requirements that usually include a masters degree in acupuncture, or a M.Ac. Acupuncture is done by inserting sterile, single use, disposable needles into very specific points on the body. These points are selected to treat the underlying causes of presenting symptoms, in order to effect a change on the mind and body levels.
What can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture has been found to be effective for many conditions that are both acute and chronic. This includes headaches and migraines, digestive issues, depression and anxiety, back, neck and shoulder pain, joint pain including tennis elbow and carpal tunnel, allergies, menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, insomnia and other stress related issues, infertility, and many others. It also helps to boost the immune system, and guard against future illnesses, while increasing energy and providing a general sense of well being
But I am scared of needles....
Me too! Fortunately, acupuncture are NOTHING like hypodermic needles you have encountered in the past. They are slightly thicker than a human hair, and look nothing like a syringe. Being so tiny, they feel nothing like any needle experience you have had before. Sometimes patients will repost feeling a dull ache or a tingling sensation. It is my goal to have your treatment time be as comfortable and relaxing as possible, never painful.
How long does the appointment last, and how long do I need to come for the treatments to be effective?
During our first appointment, we will do a full intake before treatment. This will include talking about your chief concerns, medical history, and current body functions. This allows me to assess your current medical situation and the underlying conditions. After this we will do your first treatment. I recommend that my patients come weekly for 6-8 weeks. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect in the body, much like an antibiotic. It is important to get you to a place where treatments will hold before spacing out to bi-weekly and monthly visits. After 6 weeks, we will assess your progress together, and determine the best plan for your treatment.
Does my insurance cover acupuncture?
Many insurance carriers are now covering at least a partial cost for acupuncture treatment. I encourage you to check with your carrier, and ask about the process for submitting claims. While we will not file any paper work for you, we can provide you the correct paperwork from our end.
Hope to see you soon.... and don’t forget to email me with topics for the next newsletter! Be well!
Acupuncture FAQs
- How long are treatments? How many will I need?
The first treatment takes usually about 75 minutes because of the intake process combined with the actual treatment. Subsequent sessions range from 30-60 minutes, depending on your particular needs. The amount of treatments you will need depends greatly on your ailment(s), response to treatment and your lifestyle outside of the treatment room. Your acupuncturist will be able to give you an idea of how many treatments will be needed on your first visit. Patients usually choose a series of between 2 and 12 sessions. After the initial series of treatment most patients prefer to continue acupuncture once a month to maintain optimum health. Everyone’s body heals differently, and we need to respect that.
- Does it hurt?
Acupuncture does not typically hurt. The needles are slightly thicker than a human hair, and are barely felt going in, if at all. Certain points are more sensitive than others due to qi stagnation which presents as inflammation. A patient may experience mild bruising and/or tenderness around the area of needle insertion, however this does not happen in all cases. Most patients find acupuncture treatment rather calming and relaxing.
- My health insurance covers acupuncture treatments; will you bill them for me?
For each acupuncture treatment you receive, the fee is paid by you at the time of service. Upon request, we will provide you with a “super bill”, that you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement. It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company before you receive treatment to make sure they will reimburse you.
- Can I receive acupuncture if I’m pregnant?
Yes. Some women prefer to have acupuncture for the discomforts that come with pregnancy, such as: morning sickness, low back pain, swollen ankles, constipation and tendonitis.
